“I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 percent tax, then you can forget that,” Trump said.

On one hand he’s a lunatic, on the other it’s respectable trying to force jobs into your country. He’s going about it in a ridiculous way, but maybe this isn’t all bad?

I can almost halfway understand going after American car companies because American jobs going away and all that nonsense, but the 3-series isn’t built in the US to begin with. What’s the difference between building the 3-series in Mexico or Germany? Neither of them supply jobs here and never have.
Of course, all that implies Trump thinking with logic and reason, and god knows that isn’t his strong suit.

I miss the days when my ardent support for free trade was one of the few issues upon which I could find common ground with republicans.

The best part is that, as far as I know, he doesn’t actually have the power to enforce this. He can enact 15% over 120 days according the FP, but he can’t impose a long term or 35% tariff without congressional approval. Seems pretty unlikely and BMW knows it.

He’s already shown that he can tweet “jump” to congressional Republicans and they’ll reply, “How high?” But you’re right. Trump still thinks he’s a CEO and that he can do as he pleases.

Kinda wished someone would build a tweetbot or something to troll him, with messages like “buy more cars from Mexico and China”.

Yes, working to make jobs in this country is the job of the President. Trouble is, he thinks that he can say Tweet a thing and it will happen. It doesn’t work that way. At least not yet.

Intake manifolds and other plastic bits are made for BMW’s (and others) at a factory here in KY. I’m certain that other factories across the US (particularly in SC) supply parts for 3 series.

It’s chopping of your nose to spite your face. US factories export a lot of parts which get assembled other places. If they can’t sell those cars in the US thanks to tariffs, guess who are no longer needed to supply parts.

I’m talking about production mainly. As far as I know (which isn’t a whole lot as I avoid Trump related news as best I can) it’s only production of the finished vehicle being moved to Mexico he’s freaking out over, not any of the intricate bits.

Luckily, I’m sure that ridiculous import tariffs definitely won’t result in retaliatory tariffs that hurt suppliers in the US.

I’ll be honest here. As a lifelong fanatic of the 3 Series, I have no problem whatsoever with a Mexican 3 Series. I would gladly buy one if I could buy one right now. As a conservative Republican, I voted for him. Do I agree with him on everything? Absolutely not. I simply think he’s being outrageous at this point. This is beyond ridiculous and stupid. I simply can’t agree with him at all. I’m disappointed if anything.

I foresee him repealing NAFTA with the help of Congress, starting a trade war, and causing yet another recession.

This. Everyone keeps freaking out whenever he says these things, and my response is almost ALWAYS the same: “Yeah, but he doesn’t have the power to do that.” Even with a Republican-backed Congress, he doesn’t get to make policies, only suggest them. I remember how quickly Bush I got raked over the coals for “lying,” when he really didn’t have the power to promise anything about taxes to begin with; Congress has the power of taxation, while the president has to sign off on it. Trump can’t raise taxes on a damn thing if Congress doesn’t put a bill in front of him that doesn’t have a tax hike written on it already. And as already pointed out, we’re dealing with a Republican Congress, and historically, have they EVER been eager to slap a 35% tax on ANYTHING from ANYWHERE?

Right, but if you can’t sell the finished product, why bother producing the bits?

Yeah, but if he’s successful in putting up tariffs on cars, then our parts in turn will get tariffs put on them going into other countries. All we end up with is what amounts to a massive tax hike and less jobs.

The businesses that own the congressman will likely (and hopefully!) be able to shut that down.

I’m not even convinced he thinks he’s helping. His only real talent is self-promotion, and this is just him looking good to the idiots who elected him. Look at the damage Putin has done to Russia’s economy just to look strong.

Precisely. He has to go through congress. Hopefully the businesses that own the congressmen will put a stop to these shenanigans.

Very true, this is the problem, he seems to have a similar viewpoint to me and I know nothing. Like someone uninformed (me) he seems to be looking at things just on the surface. This is not good, a president needs to be informed and analytical.
